Tragic Destruction and Comic Depression——Comparing the Aesthetic Spirits of The Cherry Orchard and A Streetcar Named Desire

作为深受俄国剧作家契诃夫影响的美国剧作家,田纳西.威廉斯在其剧作《欲望号街车》里表达了与契诃夫的名剧《樱桃园》极为相似的创作主题。然而,两位剧作家各自生活经历的不同,以及各自审美观念的不同,造成了这两部主题相近的戏剧有着不同的审美特质。威廉斯的悲剧性审美观照和契诃夫戏剧性的审美心态赋予了这两部主题近似的戏剧以相异的戏剧冲突处理方式,形成了两部戏不同的审美情趣,同时也体现了契诃夫与威廉斯两位剧作家不同的审美精神。

Deeply affected by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov,the American playwright Tennessee Williams in his drama A Streetcar Named Desire embraces the same theme as in Chekhov＇ The Cherry Orchard.However,the difference of life experience and aesthetic ideas of the playwrights makes these two dramas different in aesthetic spirits.The tragic conception of Williams and the comedic conception of Chekhov are translated into different dramatic conflicts and different aesthetic ideas of these two playwrights.
