在《普通入》中,菲利普·罗斯将传统的叙述方式与时代错误、时空跳跃、叙事浓缩等后现代叙述方式融合,是对后现代叙事手法复杂性的一种所谓"去神圣化",目的是为了对后现代文学写作进行不断创新。作家用这一独特的叙述框架完美地实现了对古代同名寓言剧的暗指,旨在探索人类经历的普遍性问题,也就是对人类未来命运这一普遍主题的关注和忧思。《普通人》标志着罗斯小说创作的重要转折点。
In Everyman, Philip Roth combines traditional literary narrative methods with postmodern narrative strategies such as anachronism, temporal/spatial disruption, and narrative contraction, in an effort to demystify and desaeralize the complexity of the postmodernist narrative. His experiments in narrative form explore the theme of universal human predicament, drawing attention to the titular allusion to the fifteenth-century allegorical play. It is arguedthat Everyman marks a significant turning point in Roth＇s career.
