This paper intends to study political connotations of The Scarlet Letter.Hester is Hawthorne＇s most complex heroine.Her rebellious spirit reveals Hawthorne＇ desire for political freedom but the final return and compromise of Hester disclose Hawthorne＇s critic stance toward Hester＇ radical profile and his conservative political stand toward European revolutions,women＇s movement and abolishment of slavery.In the return of Hester,Hawthorne had revealed his political ideologies as a conservative Democrat.He opposed to a radical way of development in his country in the 19th century and proposed a way of gradualism.
