Close-Reading and Expression: BEI Dao's Poetry Translation Theory

北岛在《时间的玫瑰》一书中所体现出的诗歌翻译观可以概括为以知音的身份进行细读的翻译理解观,以及用纯粹有力的语言重塑节奏的翻译表达观。北岛的诗歌翻译观属于表现的翻译观,与传统的再现的翻译观有根本的区别。认识并尝试建构表现的翻译观对于解决当下关于诗歌翻译的争论、建立良好的诗歌批评机制、提高译诗质量都具有十分深远的意义。

BEI Dao＇s insights into poetry translation in the book Rose of Time are concluded as ： the translator should be as qualified as a close friend of its poet when decoding the poem; and he should be as sensitive as a poet in reconstructing the rhythm with pure and expressive language when translating. This can be viewed as an expressionist approach, different from the current popular approaches aiming at representation. To clarify and establish such a theory for poetry translation is of great significance in settling the disputes in the circle of poetry translation, setting a better standard for poetry translation criticism, and finally improving the quality of translation poems.
