The progress on the production methods of polyvinyl alcohol（PVA） were introduced, which included polymerization process, alcoholysis technique, and development of new products. The emphasis was on the change of consumption structure and prospects of polyvinyl alcohol in USA, West European, Japan and at home. Some suggestions were given on domestic development of polyvinyl alcohol product.
