Objective To investigate the expressions of Tenascin-C and microvessel density (MVD) in pancreatic cancer and to study the relationship with tumor angiogenesis and clinical significance. Methods The expressions of Tenascin-C and MVD were examined in 49 cases of pancreatic cancer and 10 cases of normal pancreatic tissue by SP immunohistochemical technique. Results (1) The positive of Tenascin-C was 69.4% in pancreatic cancer and it was not detected in normal tissues, while MVD showed extensive expression in pancreatic carcinoma tissues, but limited in normal bile duct ,which showed significant difference( P 〈 0. 05 ). (2) In pancreatic carcinoma, Tenascin- C and MVD in the group with lymph node metastasis was significantly higher than that in the group without lymph node metastasis. (3) The positive expression of Tenascin-C was associated with MVD ( r = 0. 367, P 〈 0. 01 ). Conclusion Tenascin-C was overexpressed in pancreatic cancer compared with negative expression in normal tissues, which suggested Tenascin-C might be biological marker in pancreatic cancer. The levels of Tenascin-C and MVD are useful molecular markers for evaluating angiogenesis and metastasis.
