A Fool Called by All,None of His Secret Messages Heard——A Comparative Study of the Translation of "Chi" in Hawkes and Yangs Versions of "A Dream in Red Mansions"

自从霍译和杨译《红楼梦》诞生以来,对它们的探讨一直兴盛不衰,但大多是从整体看待英译本。文章选取一个不同寻常的角度,即《红楼梦》主题词"痴"在英译本中的再现,管窥霍克斯和杨宪益的艺术世界。《红楼梦》中"痴"字有三层意蕴:违背常理,佛教意义上的迷恋俗事,一般意义上的憨和呆。

Discussions about David Hawkes and Yang Xianyi＇ s translations of the novel ＂A Dream in Red Mansions＂ have been vigorous ever since the translations came into being. While many discussions approach the overall translations ,this study investigates the translations from the word ＂ehi＂, a theme word of the story. ＂Chi＂ in the novel has three layers of meanings：abnormal,illusioned in the Buddhist sense,and obtuse and dogged in the regular sense.
