On Chinese Undergraduates’ Verbal Use of English Modal Verbs

摘要 在英语语言中,情态动词是情态意义表达的主要形式。研究中国大学生情态动词口语使用的情况有助于了解和学习英语情态的地道表达,使交际更加成功。文章采用定量和定性相结合的方法,调查了中国大学生情态动词口语使用现状并对结果进行了分析讨论。调查发现,与本族语者相比,中国大学生英语口语中存在着过度使用一些核心情态动词和少用半情态动词的倾向;情态动词的使用严重受到情态动词汉语语义的干扰,使表达不自然、不地道。 Modal verbs are used to express modality in English.The study on Chinese undergraduates’ verbal use of modal verbs is supposed to be of help for them to express idiomatically.Combined with quantitative and qualitative methods,this article analyzes the particular differences in verbally using modal verbs between Chinese undergraduates and native speakers.The findings are as follows: compared with native speakers,Chinese undergraduates tend to overuse some main modal verbs and underuse some minor ones;and the Chinese meaning of modal verbs interference in students use of modal verbs.
