湘潭是清代著名的交通贸易枢纽,各省商帮汇集于此,建立会馆,形成商业社会的繁盛局面。闽商是其中较活跃的一支力量,在清前期迅速获得发展壮大。《类成堂集》详细记录了闽商会馆"十闽堂"依托妈祖信仰勇于开拓,继而发展壮大,大量购买田地、房屋、店铺,举办节庆活动,祭祀神灵,制定规约,举办演戏等文娱活动的状况,可以从一个侧面管窥闽商在湘潭的发展历程。
