An Analysis of the Translation of English Proverbs from the Perspective of Intercultural Communication

英、汉谚语由于其独特的语言特征和文化内涵而表现出明显的差异。因此,翻译者不仅要有扎实的双语语言功底,还要深刻了解两个民族的文化,并结合社会学、文化学、人类学等多学科的知识,灵活运用直译、意译、直译与意译相结合、替换、补充说明、变换比喻形象等多种翻译策略和方法,真正做好英语谚语的汉译工作。

English and Chinese proverbs,being treasures of two different languages,show distinct differences resulted from cultural differences.Translation is an intercultural communication.Thus it is the translators' responsibility to put across the connation and denotation of English proverbs into Chinese faithfully,expressively and elegantly.This paper,on the basis of the analysis of major characteristics of English proverbs,makes use of some typical examples to compare and analyze the cultural differences between English and Chinese proverbs.It highlights that in order to present an adequate translation of a proverb,translators can make use of six different translation methods flexibly.
