As a ＂Cross-Media＂ art, drama is composed with ＂text-show＂ mode. Stage directions are the key maintained the independence of drama, which are born in the script writing phase, transformed in the stage performing phase. In this article, the author first overviews stage directions, and discuss its special performance of Cao Yu＇s drama, and then explores its role and history degree. Those provide a useful example to study drama as a complete and unified art.
