The names or nicknames in the original The Story of the Stone involve metaphorical meanings, which function as the manifestations of the characters or the themes. David Hawks mainly keeps this feature in his Chinese-English translation and delves into the functions of the names or nicknames in the identity construction process, which is specifically illustrated in the following three perspectives: the metaphorical meanings of the characters' names are the signals of their identity; the nicknames are the evaluation of the characters; and the names of those slave girls or young male servants are the symbols of their respective Ms. or Master.
