The Economic Transmission and Development of Macao between Two Opium Wars: Based on the Materials in the Friend of China

两次鸦片战争之间,澳门经济经历了一个痛苦的转型时期。在香港与广州出版的英文报纸《华友西报》提供的史料中,反映出澳门在这个时期经济进行转型过程中一些问题:一是政局动荡与经济困境;二是澳门与鸦片贸易;三是澳门与苦力贸易;四是澳门早期博彩业,澳门彩票与经营方法等;五是英国商人与商业机构从澳门迁往香港。

Macao＇s economy went through a painful transmission period between two Opium Wars. This paper analyzes some problems about its trans- mission in five aspects, and these studies are based on the materials in the Friend of China, published in Hong Kong and Canton, 1842 1861. These aspects are： 1, the political turmoil and economic predicament： 2, Macao and the O- pium trade, lead to the situation of opium trading; 3, Macan and Coolie trade, analyzing the situationof this trade; 4, Macao＇s early Gaming industry introducing its early development, researching Macao＇s lotterytickets and modes of business oper- ation; 5, the British comrercial unicts and enter- prises withdrawing, from Macao and moving to Hong Kong.
