English intonation is a means of organizing meaningful utterance and a vital constituent part in achieving communication by speakers. Different types of intonation, which could transmit different information and utterance messages, are used to express the speakers emotions and intentions. The variation of intonation does not affect or change the meaning of the words themselves, while the misuse of intonation could bring about misunderstandings and finally influence communication. Therefore, mastery of correct intonation and understanding of the pragmatic functions of the intonation is extremely important for effective communication.
