The researches of word recognition have been the hot topics in recent years. The result of that is the processes model of word recognition contains two different models, sequential processes model and parallel models. The controversies between them are still to now, so is very urgent to sort out to deal with the problems. On the basis of other researcher' s theory and experiment, this study investigated the OUP effects in English words, by examining the OUP effects in the left (LVF) and right (RVF) fields of vision, provided a more limpid evidence for the process strategy when recognized the words in the cerebral. By using the technology of eye movement, the present investigation examined the word recognition strategies on left and right hemispheres performance, the results confirmed the presence of sequential processes model. Experiment 1 investigated the OUP effects in English words when presented horizontally to the LVF and RVF. We asked participants to judge the meaning of English words and Chinese characters with an early or late orthographic uniqueness point (OUP) presented horizontally to their LVF and RVF. When the participants gaze the OUP words, we use the eye tracker to trace the eye movement in different fields of vision. Consistent with the past foveal research, Experiment i produced a robust facilitatory effect of early OUP for RVF presentation, indicating the presence of sequential process in lexical retrieval. The effect was absent for LVF trials, which we argue this result from the disadvantaged position of initial letters of words presented in the LVF. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 using vertical stimulus presentations to investigate the OUP effects in different fields of vision. We want to know how the participants process the OUP words when they are vertically presented. Results indicated a marked faeilitatory effect of early OUP across visual field, supporting our contention that the lack of OUP effect for LVF presentations in Experiment 1 resulted from poor discriminability of the initial letters. In sum, these findings of the research confirmed the presence of sequential processes in both left and right hemisphere when rm:Nnized the words; and also proved that it is hard to recognize the initial letters in LVF, this is the reason why the OUP effects was absent for LVF trials in experiment 1. The results show that: (1) when the OUP words presented horizontally to LVF and RVF respectively, there was a robust facilitatory effect of early OUP for RVF presentation. The effect was absent for LVF trials, which we argue this result from the disadvantaged position of initial letters of words presented in the LVF. (2)When using the vertical stimulus presentations to investigate the OUP effects in different fields of vision, there was a marked facilitatory effect of early OUP across both visual fields, suggesting that the initial letter was advantage to the foveal, there would be the OUP effects. These findings of the research confirmed the presence of sequential processes in both left and right hemisphere when recognized the words, casting doubt on parallel models in the left hemisphere and sequential models in the right hemisphere of word processing.
