This paper summarized the technology research background of the upgraded brown coal （UBC） process invented by Kobe Steel, expounded the UBC process flow and fundamentals of the brown coal upgrading technology, introduced concretely the status of the 3t/d pilot plant and the 600t/d demonstration plant in Indonesia, and put forward the prospects of the utilization of the UBC process.
