On the Ongoing General Education at Harvard: Interview with Jay Harris

摘要 哈佛大学从2009年开始施行的全新课程体系,一方面以通识教育为核心;一方面强调哈佛的教育是自由教育,通识教育是自由教育的一部分,要和其他部分结合才有意义。自由教育的特点是又"宽"又"深"。"宽",意味着学生不受专业限制,所有现在和将来应该了解的各种知识都学;"深",意味着要挑战学生能力极限,所有讲授内容均深入到事物本质。以审美教育为例,原核心课程的文学艺术类,每门课仅涉及一个艺术门类,新通识课程则要求通过一门课全面提升学生对文学艺术各门类的审美与阐释能力。为了达到又"宽"又"深"的目标,新课程体系还倡导"跨学科合作"和"活动基础上的学习",其培养目标也不再是专门人才,而是适应各种文化、各种岗位、各种环境的"世界公民"。 The new program in General Education (GE) starting from 2009 at Harvard College is an innovation to adapt to the challenges in the 21 st century. The new curriculum reaffirmed the notion of liberal education by highlighting the depth and width of knowledge. It is aimed at cultivating "citizens of the world" who can manage to live and work in various professional fields in different cultures instead of the former goal of training professionals set by the Core Curriculum for more than three decades. Thus, the GE Standing Committee proposes the activity-based learning and interdisciplinary teaching.
