The Paradox of Social Transition and Romanism at the Beginning of 19th Century's Germany:Re-reading of E.T.A.Hoffmann's Des Vetters Eckfenster

在19世纪初期,德国处于社会转型期。浪漫主义作家霍夫曼的晚期小说《堂兄的角窗》正是对这一现代化转型过程的反思之作。在此语境中,艺术家对于社会的不断"理性化"与"商业化"似乎处于既肯定又否定的矛盾状态。本文试图从社会批判的角度来追溯文本中的不同话语,挖掘文本的多层次意蕴。

German was in a social transition stage at the beginning of 19＇h century. Des Vetters Eckfenster （ Cousin＇ s Corner Window） , a later period short story written by romanticist writer E. T. A. Hoffmann, is a reflection on this process of transition of modernity. Under this context, the artist＇ s attitude to the continuous ＂rationalization＂ and ＂commercialization＂ of society seems in a contradiction of both affirmative and negative. This paper tries to track the different discourses in the text from the angle of social criticism, and explore the multilevel significance in the text.
