In this experiment twenty-five common and trace elements including K, Na, Ca, P, S, Mg, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, I, Se, Co, Cr, Cd, Mo, Si, Ni, B, Al, Ti, Ba, Pb, As, and Hg, in the sole stratum corneum of the normal, abnormal and diseased hooves in Beijing Black and White cows on a farm were measured by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Essission Spectroscopy in spring and autumn 1987.
The result showed that the contents of some elements in the sole stratum corneum of normal hooves varied significantly in the 456 adult cows in spring and autumn in a year. Comparing the normal with the abnormal hooves in spring, there was no significant difference in content of these elements. The abnormal hooves had more Mg, but less Co, Cd,Al, and Ti than normal hooves in autumn, the difference was significant. In spring, the diseased hooves had more K, Fe, Mn, Cu, Mg, Al, Ti, Se, I, Pb and Hg than the normal hooves, the difference was significant, too. The paper first shows the ratio of Ca and P in the sole stratum corneum of the normal, abnormal and diseased hooves in Beijing Black and White cows, the ratios in the normal hooves were 5.822 : 1 in spring and 6.253 : 1 in autumn. The content of Hg in water was very high, that was the result of Hg pollution in the environment around the farm. The paper provides some clinical data for further research about the relationship between the elements and the hoof horn in Beijing Black and White cows.
