Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of warm needling in treating lumbar intervertebral disc herniation of blood stasis type. Methods Eighty patients with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation of blood stasis type were allocated to two groups using Doll's clinical case random table. The observation group of 40 patients was treated by warm needling plus functional training and the control group, by simple acupuncture plus functional training. The clinical therapeutic effects, and pre-/post-treatment VAS scores, JOA scores and serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM and IgA) were compared. Results The total efficacy rate was 92.5% in the observation group and there was a statistically significant difference compared with the control group (P〈0.05). The VAS score decreased and the JOA score increased in the two groups and the differences were statistically significant as compared with before treatment (P〈0.05, P〈0.01). A between-group comparison showed that the improvement was more obvious in the observation group than in the control group (P〈0.01). IgG~ IgM and IgA contents decreased in both groups and there were statistically significant differences in IgG and IgM as compared with before treatment (P〈0.05, P〈0.01). A between-group comparison showed that the improvement was more obvious in the observation group (P〈0.01). Conclusions Warm needling has a marked therapeutic effect on lumbar intervertebral disc herniation of blood stasis type and can improve the clinical symptoms and immunological levels in the patients.
