English ambiguity is a common language phenomenon; this paper focuses on the classification and the causes of phonetic ambiguity and adopts theory of generative phonemics to analyze the phonetic ambiguity and puts forward some methods to eliminate. Only by fully understanding the types of phonetic ambiguity, including ways to avoid phonetic ambiguity and taking advantage of English ambiguity, can the language expression be more specific and clearer and the communication can go more smoothly.
