Ten years after China's launch of its "Largc-scale Development of Ihe Western Regions" policy, historical progress has been achieved in its capacity to supply basic transportation infrastructure. At present, tile construction of nil major national highways within these regions has been completed - I he total length of fi-eeways having reached 18,600 kilometers, increasing 7.4 times compared to a decade ago. A highway network has been formed in the western regions, connecting east and west, south and north, rivers and seas, as well as the surrounding regions. Traffic mileage in the weslern regions increased to 1.5 million km by 2009, up from 533,000 km in 1999, The total length of highways above B-level grew 2.1 times, from 35,000 km to 109,000 km.
