Both Vagabond's Diary and Floating Clouds written by Hayashi Fumiko describe the wandering life of a young woman, but the outcomes of the two heroines are totally different. One achieved success while the other died in a strange land. How and why they have come to this reveals that modern Japanese women who attempt to 'step beyond the boundary' so as to break away from the restraint of traditional gender role have not gained true freedom. They fought for equal status with men,but met with final disillusionment because they relied on expansion of the Empire of Japan and were plundered by men.
