in the perspectives of demographics, housing, vitality and equity issues of large communities, this paper focuses on sociological thinking in the planning concepts and strategies of building large communities in Shanghai as well as reflections on the gains and losses in the planning and construction of social housing. It will shed new light on such issues as housing construction, population influxes and social management for new cities and large communities in Shanghai and many other cities.
