Why We Endeavor to Trace Dr Yung Wing and CEM Students' Footprints?

从容闳与留美幼童这个重大事件所处时代及事件性质所具有的标志性来看,从解剖一个时代社会横断面的历史研究方法和留美幼童在中国留学史中所表现出的先锋、示范作用来看,容闳和留美幼童的足迹是值得我们努力追寻的。有关容闳与留美幼童历史的研究,十余年来取得了丰硕的成果,发现了不少值得探索的新课题。对容闳与留美幼童的研究作出重要贡献的单位和个人,都值得我们尊敬和学习。

As one of the descendants of CEM Students,I deem that this research is of much deeper significance than that for common family history.In view of the time when the event of CEM occurred,in view of the characteristics of the event,in view of the method for historical research of dissecting a ＂sparrow＂ for revealing the transverse section of society at that time,in view of the pioneering and exemplary role of the CEM Students in history of Chinese studying abroad,the footprints of Dr Yung Wing and the CEM Students as a whole are of great value to be traced.Abundant achivements on historical research for Yung Wing and CEM Students have been made in recent ten years.Whole course of Yung Wing＇s educational project reappeared.Careers,historical environments and roles of quite a lot of CEM Students were plotted and unveiled.And some new topics worthy to be investigated are discovered.
