Between Translating and Writing Poetry:Shi Zhe-cun's Translation of European and American Modernist Poetry

施蛰存一向被认为是一位重要的新感觉派小说家,研究者常常忽视了他实际上还是欧美现代派诗歌在中国最重要的译介者和倡导者之一。他不仅翻译了大量现代派诗,还通过创作和阐释现代派诗对现代诗学做出了重要贡献。他以《现代》杂志为园地,扶持了一大批现代派诗人,最终确立了现代诗歌史上至今也未能超越的高峰。今天我们应当还他一个在中国现代诗歌翻译史上应有的地位。

Shi Zhe-cun, formerly regarded as an important New Sensibility writer, is also one of the most important translators and advocators of European and American modernist poetry in China. In addition to the translation, he has made a major contribution to modern poetics by writing and interpreting modernist poetry. What he had done to support many modernist poets by publishing their poems in the magazine Les Contemporains helped Chinese modernist poetry reach an unparalleled climax. This paper aims to help reestablish his position in Chinese history of poetry translation with the study of his close relationship with European and American modernist poetry.
