Weak Struggle and Hopeless Redemption——The Meaning of Bai Hu Guan by Xue Mo

尽管这些年描写农村题材的作品不在少数,但真正触及农民生存之重与精神之痛的却不多,而雪漠对西北农村的关切道出了社会转型中乡土传统的崩解与由此而生的乱象。《白虎关》的隐喻是一个蔓延而至无法免疫的病毒,农民生存的艰难与渴望摆脱困境的苦苦挣扎,表现在物质和精神两个层面做着自我救赎的努力,悲剧性的结局已然是无力自救的注解。

Although there are quite a few works portraying the rural themes in recent years,few works have really touched on the heavy burden of survival and the miseries of the spirits of rural people.However,the deep concerns Xue Mo has showed for the Northwest countryside have revealed the disintegration of traditional values and the resultant chaos in a transitional period in the society.The metaphor of Bai Hu Guan or The White Tiger Pass is a contagious s virus that nobody can be immune to,while the difficulty of the rural people＇s existence and the struggle to get out of it demonstrate their efforts to redeem themselves both physically and spiritually,and the tragic end is already clear that they are unable to redeem themselves.
