Yu Hua's position in the literary circles is firmly established when his novel To Live came out, for the publication of the novel symbolizes his completion of the ideological sublimation which an excellent writer must experience. In the novel, Yu has reached his understanding towards man's life from good, to evil, and then to no good and no evil. Roughly, from the beginning of 1984, Yu's entire writing career can be divided into three stages. First, he comprehends the good in human's nature. Then, he reveals the evil. Finally, he depicts man's good on the basis of his adequate comprehension of man's evil. The process demonstrates the so-called artistic conception that the mountain is always the mountain whereas water is eventually water, and that each of them possesses a unique appeal.
