The mid-1930s saw a heated debate on ＂common language＂ which was a crucial issue for the construction, standardization and development of the written Chinese since the May Fourth Vernacular Movement, which involved many well-known scholars and publications and exerted great ideo- logical and cultural influence. The study of the origin and development of this discussion can help reveal its implications and significance in the historical context, which should have some theoretical and practical significance to further development of the written Chinese.
