On books censorship of the Late Qing government——taking category analysis as the center

晚清政府对书籍的审查,就违禁书籍种类来说,大致有二:其一是传统意义上的、在各个朝代都广泛存在的,如淫书淫画、内容不实、激化社会矛盾和危害国家安全类书籍;其二是具有近代意义的、到晚清才出现的,如侵犯版权类、宣传维新思想和革命理论类书籍。清政府对违禁书籍采取严厉查禁政策,或禁售卖,或禁阅读,或毁版权。晚清政府的书籍审查,虽有某些积极因素,但总的来说,是对进步思想和进步言论的压制,是对人类进步的反动。

The books censorship of the Late Qing mainly involved in books of two types.One type,of the traditional sense,existed widely in each dynasty,such as the pornographic books and paintings,and books whose contents are not real,may intensify social contradictions,and endanger national security.The other type,of the modern sense,appearing till the Late Qing dynasty,are books of infringement of copyright and of propagandizing reform and revolutionary theory.The Late Qing government usually took stringent ban policy on the banned books： banning sale,banning reading,or destroying the copyright.The books censorship of the Late Qing was positive in some ways,but in general,it was a suppression of progressive thinking and speech,and it was reactionary to human progress.
