For further using in the GIS application based on database,a new idea was proposed to build a relational database that stores spatial data as much as those in the MapInfo digital map and do some research work on spatial data with no dependence on commercial GIS components for secondary development. Focusing on the regional objects within the map layer which describes geographic regionalism, their data structures are studied and the database model is designed for re-storing those spatial data. And the database for national geographic regionalism is built in SQL Server. Then, the principle of regional recognition is proposed and steps to do the recognizing work with T-SQL are discussed. Finally the arithmetic of regionalism recognizing for multi-level is designed in details and implemented into the practice. Experimental results show that this arithmetic is capable of recognizing geographic regionalism where the target position locates, with high accuracy, short processing time and low consumption of system resources.
