Theatrical Activities and Their Social Functions in the Qing Dynasty Taiwan

清代台湾的戏曲活动十分繁盛。明清以来延绵不绝的闽粤移民将故乡演戏的习俗带到台湾,由于戏曲活动具有酬神、娱乐、示禁规约等社会功能,对历尽艰险开发台湾的移民来说,可以起到精神慰藉、休闲娱乐以及约束规范宗亲、乡族行为等作用,对清代台湾移民社会走向稳定有序,具有积极意义,并且促进了台湾戏曲文化的繁荣与发展。

Traditional Chinese operas prospered in the Qing Dynasty in Taiwan.Immigrants brought with them local operas of Fujian and Guangdong.As performances of these operas were meant for entertaining both gods and men,and fulfilling conventional societal functions,they played a soothing,stabilizing and disciplining role to the immigrants in a new and often adversary surroundings.These performances also served as a catalyst for the development of a local theatrical culture in Taiwan.
