On Conceptual Metonymic Motivation of English Noun-to-Verb Conversion

作为英语中最为能产的构词方式之一,名词转用作动词体现了人类基本的转喻思维模式。概念转喻理论不仅为名转动提供了认知理据,而且是诠释这一转换过程的重要机制。基于概念转喻的视角研究名转动有助于更好地揭示该语言现象产生的认知机制,为词类转换研究和进一步探究语言结构与人们认知思维方式间的关系提供了新的视角。

As one of the most productive way of word formation, noun-to-verb conversion reflects human being＇ s metonymic mode of thinking. Conceptual metonymy not only serves as the cognitive motivation of noun-to-verb shift, but also is critical to the understanding of this conversion process. This study is conducive to the revelation of cognitive motivation of noun-to-verb conversion, and provides a new approach to studying conversion and exploring the connections between language structure and human cognition.
