This study, based on the phonological theory of contemporary sign language, makes an analysis of the phonological structure of Shanghai Sign Language (SSL). The authors think that a "sign" in SSL is in fact a syllable, and usually the smallest semantic unit, which can be used independently as a monosyllabic morpheme. However, SSL contains disyllabic mono-morphemes and bimorphemic monosyllables. The authors believe that the movement and location of the "sign" are the two basic segments in SSL, with the movement being the syllable nu- cleus, and the location also being likely to serve as the syllable nucleus if it is not adjacent to the movement. The syllable nucleus is the basic form suppomng handshape changes, orientational changes and secondary movement in SSL.
