Both Chinese and western traditional translation studies have focused on the source text and considered ' faithfulness ' and ' equlvalence' as the absolute standards of translation. Based on the notion of ' fidelity' discussed in Skopostheorie, the translation methods adopted by two translators C. H. Brewitt-Taylor and Moss Roberts were probed into from two aspects of plot descriptions and cultural aspects. It was found that the two translators adopt considerably different translation methods due to different translation Skopoi and translation briefs, which leads to the different degree of 'fidelity' between the source text and the target text, and the issue of degree of ' fidelity' in practice was further justified.
