英语“圆周句”的评价功能——以《傲慢与偏见》中的一封信为例

On the Appraisal Function of the English Periodic Sentences:Taking a letter in Pride and Prejudice as an example

本文以奥斯丁的《傲慢与偏见》中的一封信为语料,运用Martin等人创立的评价理论具体地分析语料中句型的使用对语篇整体意义的构建作用。经分析发现:语料中圆周句的大量使用,不仅加强了词汇的评价意义,更巧妙地突出了小说人物独有的个性,深化了主题内涵。通过分析使我们更清楚地认识到,语篇的评价功能不仅体现在具有评价意义的形容词或副词上,句型的评价功能也同样为语篇的整体意义的构建作出贡献。

Based on Martin＇s appraisal system,this paper attempts to find the role of sentence pattern in a letter in Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austin.Through analysis we find that a large number of periodic sentences used in the novel not only strengthen the evaluative meaning but also emphasize a unique character in a clever way and therefore deepen the main idea of the text.In a word,after analysis we may better understand that the evaluative meaning of a text may not only be expressed through adjectives and adverbs but also through sentence patterns.That is to say,sentence patterns make great contributions to the construction of the text meaning as well.
