Objective: To investigate if the brief training of acceptance coping strategy can help to increa-se individual's pain coping ability and if threat cognitive appraisal of pain would impair the effect of the acceptance strategy.Method: The experiment used two by two between-subjects design. One factor was the cognitive appraisal of pain including threatening and reassurance cognitive appraisal. The other factor was strategy using including acceptance and no-training.101 participants were randomly assigned into four groups, who underwent 2 trials of the cold pressor pain induction with measurement of tolerance, pain intensity and coping strategies using. Results: The acceptance-reassurance group's pain tolerance in the second CPT and their pain tolerance increase value were higher than those in control group either in threat or reassurance condition. But when pain was appraised as a potential threat, the acceptance group's pain tolerance in the second CPT and their pain tolerance increase value were lower than the acceptance-reassurance group, and just higher than the no strategy-reassurance group. The acceptancethreat group reported less use of acceptance than the acceptance-reassurance group. Conclusion: The research implied that brief training of acceptance coping strategy increased pain tolerant ability. However, threat cognitive appraisal of pain impaired the effect of acceptance strategy on pain tolerance and coping.
