Experience of Professor ZHOU Zhong-ying in Differentiating and Treating Exogenous Cough

周仲瑛教授治疗外感咳嗽具有丰富的经验。认为其病因以风为先导,常挟寒、挟热、挟燥,表现风寒、风热、风燥为患。病机总属肺气宣肃失常,治应祛邪利肺,因势利导,以宣通肺气为基本要法,同时重视化痰祛痰。临证时当慎防病情演变转化,须治随证转,并注意审证求因,切勿见咳止咳,慎用收涩镇咳药,必要时结合辨病用药。

Professor ZHOU Zhong-ying has abundant experience in treating exogenous cough.He believes that the etiology of this disease is firstly caused by wind,frequently accompanied by cold,heat and dryness,manifesting wind-cold,wind-heat and wind-dryness.The pathogenesis is generally attributed to failure of lung qi to disperse and descend,so the therapeutic methods should be eliminating pathogens and draining lung and removing pathogens by adopting different therapies according to different locations of diseases.In general,ventilating lung qi should be considered as the fundamental principle;meanwhile,removing and resolving phlegm cannot be ignored.In the diagnostic process,the progression and transformation of pathological condition should be noticed,the treatment must be changed according to symptoms and syndrome differentiation to find out the causes should also be paid attention to.Cough-relieving drugs are not applicable to all patients with cough.Drugs with astringent and cough-relieving effects should be cautiously applied and combined with disease differentiation to administrate if necessary.
