The difficulties of Li Shangyin＇s poetry, especially his elusive poems, sometimes lie in the indeterminacy of agency and syntax. Through a close observation of some of Li Shangyins＇ poems with regard to the relationship between the speaker and the protagonist, this paper aims to ascertain what can be determined and what remains undeterminable, and how the possibilities of this relationship enable different interpretations.
