Network simulation plays an important role in the evaluation of communication network＇s performance, and NS-2 is one of the most widely used open-source network simulator. Random number generator （RNG） is a crucial part of NS-2, however, most of relevant researchers do not pay attention to the proper use of RNG which brings unreliability to the simulation results. The structure and working principle of the RNG were described, and how to utilize RNG to carry out repeated independent experiments and establish the simulation environment was discussed, such as node＇s initial position and the data flow＇s starting and ending time, and the right way to use RNG was put forward. The results provide the relevant researchers with the correct use of RNG.
