In many of her short stories, American woman writer Katherine Anne Porter delineates the wasteland mental state of her female characters. By way of adopting psychological perspectives of libido, instinct and dream interpretation, this paper probes into the complicated psychological development and the unbalanced personality structure of Porter＇s three female characters, namely, Miranda the child, Violeta the Mexican adolescent, Laura the American expatriate. By the artistic use of Freudian theory, Miss Porter plays the role as a psychoanalyst, she presents an acute observation of these female characters＇ spiritual disintegration and makes an accurate diagnosis of their neurotic symptoms.
