Recently, a new class of methyltransferases (MTs) has been found in plants. They are named SABATHMTs by the first three identified enzymes namely salicylic acid carboxyl methyltransferases (SAMT), benzoic acid carboxyl methyltransferases (BAMT) and theobromine synthase. The SABATHMT proteins are able to catalyze both O-methylation and N-methylation of phytohormones and other small molecules with the formation of corresponding methylated ester. These esters play an important role in regulation of plant secondary metabolism, development and defenses. Here, we summarize the progress of SABATHMT research on identification of substrates, expression patterns and evolution in plants.
