The double images of "trace" and "crack" in Jazz reveal the displacement and loss of black identity in the culture of white supremacy. During the reconstruction of black identity, Morrison chooses the improvised feature of jazz music as the narrative strategy of the novel. In this way, she shows the fluidity and uncertainty of individual identity in post-industrial society, and also points a possible way that ethnic minorities can realize their own unioue identitv in the crisis ofhein~ marcrinaliT^d
