Epiphany is one of the most important writing techniques that James Joyce employed in his well - known short story The Dead. And by employing Falconer' s "Mental Space" theory, it is possible to go deep into the characters' inner world and deepen the readers' understanding of the theme of the story. In the story, the speech conflict between the hero Mr. Conroy and three women characters leads to much transformation of the main character' s mental space. As a result, Mr. Conroy discards his authoritative status provided by the British colonizers and returned to the Irish tradition. Mr. Conroy' s spirit revives, so does that of the whole nation.
