This paper discusses the conflict between civilization and savagery in the novel The Pioneers,by James Fenimore Cooper,an early American writer.Cooper deals with the conflict from three perspectives： the conflict between being civilized and being primitive,the conflict between preservation of environment and destruction of it and finally the conflict between advocating of laws and disregarding of laws.Through all these conflicts and contests,the novelist reveals a picture of the American frontier society which is characterized by sweeping changes brought about by the encroaching power of civilization.
