Longan and Litchi in Han Dynasty

汉武帝平定南越后,龙眼和荔枝成为交州贡物。东汉和帝时桂阳郡临武令唐羌上书天子,称交趾七郡贡送龙眼和荔枝劳苦人民,请求罢除,和帝同意废止。两汉都城均位于中原,产于南方的龙眼和荔枝果实通过驿传系统运送至京师,成为宫廷珍品,并用以赏赐外国。

On the time of the country of Nanyue conquered by the empire Han Wudi,longans and lychees were paid intribute to Han Dynasty.In the Eastern Han Dynasty,Tang Qiang,the county magistrate of Linwu petitioned the Emperor He for exempting the tribute of longans and lychees the Seven Shires of Jiaozhi paid,for people couldn’t absorb the additional hardships.The Emperor He agreed.According to the historical documents,the Seven Shires of Jiaozhi delivered longans and lychees to Luoyang by post system.The two kinds of fruit from the four shires of Rinan,Jiuzhen,Jiaozhi and Hepu should be shipped to Nahai shire,then through Yangshan Col and Linwu Country,to Luoyang in the end.The fruit from Cangwu,Yulin and Nanhai should firstly be sent to Linwu Country by horse or vehicle or boat.In the fact,a major route of transportation from Jiao Province to the capital of Eastern Han Dynasty became important.
