摘要
逻辑学对模态的研究为语言学研究情态提供了重要的研究方法,但未对模态词做语义学分析也未能为分析自然语言的情态提供一套系统的模式。Halliday从命题之间的逻辑关系出发,概括了归一性系统中两极之间的中介模态选项,构建了一个情态系统,吸收了20世纪的多值逻辑学、模糊逻辑学的理念和模糊语义学对传统真值语义学的批判。同时,他对情态词扩展使用的描述,发现了语法隐喻层面的情态隐喻,把情态语义学研究推上了语篇语义学和语用学层次,为批评性话语分析等学科提供了科学的分析方法。
Modal logic has provided important methodologies for linguistic analysis of modals and modal expressions but has done little semantic analysis for a general theory about modals in natural languages. Halliday started from logical relations between propositions and formulated a comprehensive system of Modality in relation to Polarity, echoing developments in multivalue logic and fuzzy logic, and in a sense enriching fuzzy semantics that focuses on the meaningfulness of the third values for criticizing traditional truth-conditional semantics. Meanwhile, Halliday＇ s description of extended uses of modals has led to the discovery of a related system of modality metaphor, which has highlighted semantic analysis of modals on the discursive level, offering substantial analytical methods for a variety of disciplines including Critical Discourse Analysis.
