Doctor Peter Parker and the propagation of western medicine in China during 19th century——The first person to use ether anesthesia in China

1846年,美国牙科医生莫顿（Wilian Thomas Morton）在麻省总医院进行乙醚麻醉下外科手术演示的成功,标志着现代麻醉学的开端.伯驾医生（Peter Parker,1804～1889）在其传教生涯中将这一技术最先传播至中国,在广州创建了中国最早的一家西医医院,并于1847年首先在该院施行了乙醚麻醉.西方近代医院制度在中国的兴起,对中国近代的公共卫生事业和西方医学在中国的发展影响深远.

Wilian Thomas Morton, a dentist in USA, demonstrated an ether anesthesia for a surgical operation with success in Massachusetts General Hospital in 1846, which was a beginning mark of modern anesthesiology. Peter Parker （1804-1889） made this technique propagation to China, used ether anesthesia firstly during his missionary work in Guangzhou and set up a modern hospital of western medicine. The development of western medicine and the modern public health service were deeply influenced with the emergence of western modern hospital system in China.
