摘要
《罗摩拉》是乔治.艾略特唯一的一部历史小说,作者以15世纪末意大利佛罗伦萨政权、教权的纷争为背景,展现了个人在对面各种问题时所作出的各自的道德选择和不同的结果。作者借古喻今,通过对小说中三个人物道德取向的讨论,否定了当时流行的虚无主义、利己主义道德观,指出了教会存在的某些弊端,通过对罗摩拉道德成长过程的描绘,肯定了道德自我完善,这是有现实意义的。
Romola is the only historical novel written by George Eliot.In this novel,the authortakes the conflicts between the state and religious powers in Florence towards the end of the 15thcentury as background and depicts different people who make different moral choices when dealingwith different things and their different results.This work,though telling an ancient story,is re-flection of present affairs.By discussing the different moral choices of the 3 main characters in thestory the author denies the current Nihilism and Egoism popular in her own society and points outthe problems of the Church.Through the description of the moral growth of Romola,George Eliotaffirms moral self-perfection which has a practical significance.
