Far beyond vulgarity, the language of Oscar Wilde's comedies is rich in elegance. Moreover, words about love, moral judgments and attitude of life are abundant in the conversa-tions of the characters in his plays, forming another remarkable trait of the language of Wilde'scomedies. Not only are these traits branded with Victorianism, but they also divulge the subtle re-lationship between Wilde and the Victorian ideology—both catering and rebellious. This relation-ship,to some extent, reflects the ideology of the upper-class in the late-Victorian times. It is oneof the reasons for the recognition and success that Wilde's comedies had gained among the upper-class audience of his time.
